Trump brings back Presidential Physical Fitness Test: Here’s what you have to do to pass
American public schools will once again assess students’ physical activity levels thanks to the Presidential Fitness Test.
President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday reviving the Presidential Fitness Test discarded by the Obama Administration in 2013.
According to the executive order, the test is a part of a campaign to “address the threat to the vitality and longevity of our country that is posed by America’s declining health and physical fitness.”
“It is an important step in our mission to make America healthy again,” said Trump during the press conference as several celebrated athletes like pro golfer Bryson DeChambeau, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, and former NFL linebacker and Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor accompanied him.
The Presidential Fitness Test was introduced during the Cold War era to address growing concerns about American children’s physical activity. Then President John F. Kennedy advocated for youth fitness in a Sports Illustrated article titled “The American Soft.” A central idea in his writing centered around children spending too much time watching television as opposed to working on building their bodies.
The test has been widely criticized for the negative effect it has on the mental health of children, according to Yahoo. It was phased out during the Obama Administration and replaced with the Presidential Youth Fitness program, which had a more holistic approach rather than a competitive one.
What is the Presidential Fitness Test?
The Presidential Fitness Test is a fitness assessment of cardiovascular strength. President Trump’s executive order did not explain which exercises would be included in the test. But the basics have stayed similar over the years.
Here’s the common breakdown:
- One-mile run
- Sit-ups
- Push-ups or Pull-ups
- Shuttle run
- Sit-and-reach
